Celebrate Language Week

This week, as proclaimed by Mayor Greg Fischer, is Celebrate Languages Week in JCPS. Did you know that…

  • at least half of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual, i.e., they speak two or more languages?
  • More than 65 million U.S. residents speak a language other than English at home.
  • 136 languages are spoken by students in JCPS
  • In schools across the district JCPS offers classes in American Sign Language, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish.
  • At Goldsmith Elementary we teach Spanish as a Special Area to all grade levels.
  • We have an optional Spanish Immersion in grades K and 1 which will grow by one grade level each year. Students learn math and science fully in Spanish.
