Spanish Immersion Strand

We will be offering a Spanish Immersion strand at Goldsmith next year.

Current and incoming Kindergarten students are eligible to apply for the program. You will increase your chances of being accepted to the program if you apply to be in the International and Cultural Studies Magnet Program. This is done online, on the JCPS website.

If you are a current Kindergarten family you will get this note along with a sheet of information about Dual-Language Immersion programs.

Here is the text of the note for those of you who just cannot wait:

Dear Goldsmith Parent:

I am pleased to announce that Goldsmith will offer a Spanish Immersion class next school year. We will be one of only two schools in Louisville offering a Spanish Immersion program. Students will have an amazing opportunity to begin fluent academic Spanish language acquisition as elementary students. As bi-lingual citizens, they will have a valuable and marketable skill for the modern competitive workplace.

During the first year, the Spanish Immersion strand will be open to Kindergarten and 1st grade students only, with plans to expand the program from K-5 one grade at a time.

As a current Kindergarten student, your child has the option of being in the very first group of students to receive Spanish Immersion instruction. This is an exciting and challenging option that I hope you will consider for your student.

At Goldsmith Elementary, Spanish Immersion will include Math and Science instruction fully in Spanish for approximately half of the school day. Students will continue to learn Reading, Writing and Language Arts (ELA) in English as they normally would.

If you decide to participate in this program Mr. Davis will be your child’s teacher for the ELA portion of the day and they would have a native Spanish speaking teacher for math and science.

Our current Spanish teacher has been piloting this program with small groups of Kindergarten students all year. If your child has not had this experience yet, they will before the end of the year. Ask your child how they enjoyed learning in this way! Parents are invited to observe this pilot from 3:00 PM- 3:30 PM daily if you would like to see what immersion looks like.

Attached please find an informational sheet about the many benefits of Dual-Language Immersion programs. More information about applying to be in the program will be coming soon. Current and incoming Kindergarten families can increase your chances of being accepted into the immersion strand by applying to the Goldsmith magnet program (see JCPS Website/”Register and Apply”).
